Red-dark color and gossypol
Gossypol pigments make crude cottonseed oil dark and are not acceptable in edible oil without refining. Fix: Plan mandatory alkali + bleach + deodorize for food use; never sell crude cottonseed as edible.
Quality control
Most cottonseed-oil complaints trace to feed stock, moisture, roast or cook, and filtration — not to pressing tonnage. Work the list below top to bottom before you change anything on the machine.
Common defects
Gossypol pigments make crude cottonseed oil dark and are not acceptable in edible oil without refining. Fix: Plan mandatory alkali + bleach + deodorize for food use; never sell crude cottonseed as edible.
Cracked or damp seed raises lipase activity and free fatty acids before pressing. Fix: Press fresh, keep seed dry and cool, and shorten the seed-to-press interval.
Sunflower-like wax isn't the issue; here, residual pigments and gums cloud refined oil when chilled. Fix: Complete bleaching and de-waxing where a clear cold-stable salad oil is the target.
Gossypol breakdown and unswept volatiles leave a harsh note in crude oil. Fix: Deodorize for edible grade; control cook temperature to limit pigment degradation.
Fix it in one scope
Before adjusting the press, confirm feed grade, moisture, the roast/cook window, and filtration depth for Cottonseed oil. Those four cover most of this list; the press mostly reveals what came before it.

Cottonseed Oil Problems and Fixes should not be quoted from an equipment name alone. Check feed lots, target oil, post-press handling, and packing rhythm in one scope before deciding which Cottonseed Oil Press modules stay. Cottonseed is almost always 300/325 hot press + cook + mandatory refining (gossypol).
When feed condition, moisture, impurities, batch weight, and product position are unclear, press tonnage and filter area become guesswork. Factory systems share 60 MPa and 2.2 kW motors; hot net pressing is 30–40 min/barrel and cold net pressing is ~2 h/barrel — cycle time matters more than brochure tonnage.
Factory model check
Pin models to published factory specs before tonnage talk.
Hot 300/325: 300–325 ton, 60 MPa system, standard barrel Ø390×800 mm / max 100 kg, net pressing 30–40 min/barrel, ~1.5 h for 2 barrels with loading, 2.2 kW motor. Cold 355/400/426/480/500: 370–630 ton, integrated frame, same 100 kg standard barrel, net pressing ~2 h/barrel, ~4.5 h for 2 barrels with loading; optional Ø300 high-pressure barrel max 60 kg. Residual oil target ~≤5% (peanut hot often 6–8% measured).
Equipment check
Once the route is clear, write the interfaces: how preparation feeds the press, how oil leaves the press, how filtration connects to tanks, and how packing receives finished oil.
Record feed form, daily volume, moisture, and sorting needs so pretreatment is not left to operators.
Gossypol 0.5–2.5% makes alkali + bleach + deodorize mandatory. Leave piping and sample points for refining in the first layout.
Prepare space, power (often 380V/50Hz/3ph), labor, target package, local rules, and acceptance method before quotation.
Usually no. Most cottonseed-oil defects start with feed stock, moisture, roast/cook, or filtration. The press controls pressure and cycle, not the chemistry already in the seed.
