Cottonseed crude oil: storage, sampling, and refining handoff with hard data

Crude cottonseed oil from press: dark red/brown (gossypol + chlorophyll), FFA 1-3%, free gossypol ~0.04%, bound gossypol 0.5-1.5%, phosphatides 1.5-3%, moisture 0.2-0.5%, color Lovibond Y >60 / R 8-15. Handoff sequence: hot crude (60-90°C) → settling tank 24-48 h jacketed (drop sediment <0.1%) → 200-300 mesh plate-frame filter → buffer tank (50-150 m³ for 50-100 t/d) → refining feed pump. Refining (NBD): degum (phosphoric acid 0.05-0.1%) → neutralize (caustic 0.5-1.5%) → bleach (clay 1-2% at 100-110°C) → deodorize (240-260°C × 30-60 min, vacuum 2-5 mbar) → free gossypol <0.045%, FFA <0.1%, peroxide <2 meq O₂/kg, color Y <30.

Crude oil storage

Tank: stainless 304/316L jacketed (oil 60-90°C), 5-15 m³ for 10-30 t/d / 50-150 m³ for 50-100 t/d. 24-48 h settling drops sediment <0.1%. Sample point + temperature gauge + level sensor.

Clarification step

Settling tank → 200-300 mesh plate-frame filter (sediment removal) → buffer tank → refining. For sale as crude (no refining): 1-5 μm bag filter for tanker shipment, FFA + gossypol COA per batch.

Refining handoff

NBD train: degum + neutralize + bleach + deodorize. Footprint 100-200 m² for 30-80 t/d, stainless 304/316 contact, dedicated venting for deodorizer 240-260°C vapors. Capex $200-400k for 50 t/d.

Crude oil specifications

What crude cottonseed oil parameters define refining design

  • FFA target post-press: 1-3%. Above 5% (over-cooked or aged seed) requires more caustic in neutralization, raising losses 1-2%.
  • Free gossypol post-press: ~0.04%. Bound gossypol 0.5-1.5%. NBD refining must reduce free to <0.045%, mostly via 240-260°C deodorizer.
  • Phosphatides 1.5-3%: removed by degumming with phosphoric acid 0.05-0.1% + water hydration. Wet-gum by-product not commercially recovered for cottonseed (unlike soybean lecithin).
  • Color Lovibond Y >60 / R 8-15 crude → Y <30 / R <3 refined via 1-2% activated clay bleach at 100-110°C × 20-30 min vacuum.
  • Moisture 0.2-0.5% crude. Higher moisture (>0.5%) raises soap formation in neutralization, increases refining loss 1-2%.
  • Tank/pipe material: stainless 304/316L for refined; carbon steel acceptable for crude oil holding ≤7 days; longer hold requires stainless to avoid iron pickup darkening.

Future-proofing

How to leave press stage ready for refining integration

  • Floor space allowance: 100-200 m² for NBD train at 30-80 t/d (degum + neutralize + bleach + deodorize + utilities).
  • Steam: refining adds 1-3 t/h boiler load (deodorizer 240-260°C requires high-pressure or thermal-oil steam at 280-300°C jacket).
  • Vacuum: deodorizer requires 2-5 mbar absolute, achieved by steam ejector + barometric condenser or oil-sealed mechanical vacuum pump.
  • Crude-oil pump: positive-displacement gear or screw pump, 1-10 m³/h, 304/316L wetted.
  • Sampling and lab: free gossypol HPLC, FFA, peroxide, color Lovibond, moisture — daily QC during refining operation.
